Currently closed // Just a stone’s throw from the market at Viktualienmarkt, the Stadtmuseum (Munich City Museum) sends visitors on a journey through Munich’s past.
The Munich City Museum is closed to the public for several years due to a general refurbishment. The film museum's cinema will remain open.
The museum’s main collection goes by the name of “Typically Munich” and uses selected objects to bring the city’s history to life. Breaking its evolution down into five historical periods, the exhibition looks at what is typically Munich, how long this has been the case and, most importantly, why. In addition, the permanent exhibition "National Socialism in Munich" deals with Munich's role as the "capital of the movement".
Changing special exhibitions feature works from the various collection areas, such as applied art, urban culture, photography, graphics/paintings, advertising art, puppet theatre/exhibition, music and fashion.
The exhibitions will be open until 7 January 2024, when the museum will close for several years for a general renovation.
From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., locals and tourists meet in the adjacent Stadtcafé. On sunny days, you can enjoy the view of Sankt-Jakobs-Platz with the Ohel Jakob Synagogue and the Jewish Museum from the outdoor seating. You can also choose the quiet inner courtyard, where trees and umbrellas provide shade in summer.
Like the Pinakotheken, the Munich Stadtmuseum also offers its exhibits in an online collection. By chance or depending on the search term, you can take a digital look at works from the fields of applied art, photography, graphics, painting, fashion, puppet theatre and show business, advertising art and urban culture.
Good to know: Munich Card holders are entitled to a reduced admission fee. If one owns the Munich City Pass, the entrance is free of charge. No matter which card you choose, the public transport is included.
